Humboldt County Herpetological Society
Pet Support
One of the services that the HCHS  offers the local community is Pet Support.   Here in Humboldt County many
herp keepers often find it difficult to access vital information and obtain supplies required for the proper care of
their pets.  This is a rather isolated county; even our neighbors have to drive up to four hours to reach larger herp
outfits in the city.  We hope to address this problem by providing a variety of links and contacts to experienced
people within the area.  If we can answer your questions or point you in the right direction, your pets' needs will be
served sooner, and you will perhaps save time and gas.

Receiving accurate information is always crucial when you need to know about the specific upkeep of an animal.
While the local pet stores will try to offer as much advice as possible and may keep a variety of informational
books in stock, much of the "education" is only general.  Many of us have posed simple herp questions that have
been answered with "I think..." or  "I read somewhere..."   Answers like this do not satisfy the hopes of
successfully addressing species-specific needs, health-related issues, propagation requirements, and so forth.

There is a multitude of information available online, and we have listed a variety of contacts on our links page.
These include links to other herp societies, breeders, supply stores, etc.  Pet Support, on the other hand, offers
links to local herp-keepers and/or breeders.  We feel that a personal touch often goes further than just a simple
online reply from somewhere far away.   Chances are, because of locality, herp-keepers may actually get to speak
or meet with members of the HCHS  Pet Support group.

It should be noted that we are not all professional herpetologists, nevertheless, many of us have been keeping
herps for a number of years.  We believe personal experiences walk hand in hand with knowledge.  We are
always learning something new.

Where food and enclosure supplies are concerned, we are constantly on the lookout for local breeders of prey
items as well as cage builders and folks offering clean secondhand items (cage supplies, etc.).  This pursuit is
an important aspect of our Adoptions and Rescue as well.  Occasionally, we also pick up items that are difficult to
obtain locally for people when one of us has to drive to the city.

It is recommended that everyone should have at least one or two books or guides regarding the proper care of
their specific pet(s).   We ask that you learn as much as you can about your proposed pet before you actually
obtain one.  We urge you to fulfill all caging requirements as well.   It is our passion to assist you with all your
herp-related questions, however our advice will do little to help if you do not cover the basics.
