| PRAIRIE DRAMA! Western Yellow-bellied Racer (C. c. mormon) attempting to feed on adult male Western Fence Lizard (Sceloporus occidentalis) Dolason Prairie, Bald Hills, RNSP (Humboldt County) June 2, 2009 [GPS-DOLASON-COLUBER-01HU] Pictured: Joshua Naumann (RNSP seasonal employee) The veg management crew at the park was amazed at the confrontation it witnessed while pulling Scotch Broom at Dolason Prairie. We saw both a racer and a 'blue-belly" basking on the same log. Both saw our approach and disappeared under the log, where they apparently met. Suddenly there was a blur of action in a tiny hollow at the end of the log. The first three pictures were indeed a blur of writhing coils and shining blue. It appeared that the racer was coiling to restrain rather than suffocate. It had the lizard by the hind leg and base of the tail. The fourth picture shows the fence lizard fighting back by biting the lower laterals of the snake's neck! The racer actually let go, and the lizard made a grand escape! The close-up in the middle shows the lizard's bite marks. What a sighting! |
