Western Whiptail  (Cnemidophorus tigris)
[GPS-PQ-CNEMTIG-01]   March 20, 2009

This is only the second whiptail that I have come across in my lifetime meanderings of the canyon.
They are agile and very difficult to catch by hand.  This one was on the edge of a nopales (prickly pear) patch; no going after it
in there!

                            San Diego County (North)
"The Views Canyon" - Rancho Penasquitos     March 18th and 20th, 2009
This area was the stomping grounds of my youth.  I survey it annually when I visit family.  I never spied night snakes or whiptails during
my youth.  In fact, I sight more night snakes nowadays than kings, ring-necks, and gopher snakes.
A NOTE REGARDING THE HERPS IN THIS ISOLATED CANYON PLOT:  Since my childhood I have seen a drastic
reduction in the number of  kingsnakes, ring-necks, gopher snakes, Southern Pacifc Rattlers, and Garden Slender
Salamanders.   Garters, Pacific Chorus Frogs, Coast Horned Lizards, and the Red Diamond Rattlesnake are long gone.
During this particular visit I did not see a single Western Skink or Side-blotched Lizard, which are usually abundant.
Desert Roadtrip 2009:   Steve Krause (yours truly) and Brad Fisher spent 3 days in Mojave and
Colorado desert habitat and brought home a whole camera full of herps.  We started at the
Pisgah Crater
Lava Fields south of
Route 66 near Bagdad Cafe; we then headed to Joshua Tree National Park and
camped at
White Tank; the next morning we hiked the Lost Horse Mine Trail; in the afternoon we headed
towards
Box Canyon Road near Mecca, CA , where we hiked the Sheep Springs Oasis Trail; our last day
was spent exploring
Palm Canyon Trail in Anza Borrego Desert State Park in Borrego Springs, CA.  Here
are some pics of one surprise after another!
GPS coordinates are linked to most of the photos.
